Hugo (Nick) Oster, 86, of Crystal Lake, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018 in Huntley. He was born on May 11, 1931 in Chicago to Frank and Catharina (nee Angele) Oster.
Nick attended University of Illinois at Navy Pier, joined the National Guard, and served in the Army in Germany during the Korean War. After honorable release from active duty, Nick continued to serve in the National Guard. He was an accredited electrician and 55-year member of IBEW Local 134. He was a facilities manager for Cotter & Company in Chicago then Harvard for 30 years. Nick grew up playing sports at the YMCA, was an avid tennis player and golfer, and one of the original members of the Wilde Bunch at MCC fitness center. He enjoyed being his own gardener and car and home maintenance man.
He is survived by his wife, Gretchen (nee Werner) Oster; his children, Laura and Victoria; his grandchildren, Rachel and Patrick; his brother, John; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Geraldine; and his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, at 12 O'clock Noon at First Congregational Church, 461 Pierson Street, Crystal Lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, or any military charity of your choice.
