Doris June (Sundberg) DeVerna

Doris was born September 2, 1923, to Edna Doremus and Elmer Sundberg in Brooklyn, New York.   Doris passed away peacefully at the age of 100 at her home in Lake Barrington Woods.  She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; and daughter Gail (Ken Krieger, deceased).

As a teenager, Doris worked diligently developing her speed skating skills.  She achieved champion status and was awarded the “Silver Skates” by Ed Sullivan twice at Madison Square Garden.  After high school, Doris attended the Grace Institute .  This prepared her to accept a position as Secretary to the Chairman of the Board of the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1946 Doris married Bill DeVerna who was a WW11 Veteran.   Doris, Bill and their three children moved from Brooklyn to Arlington Heights in 1963 when Bill accepted a position as Vice President of International Banking at the Harris Trust & Savings Bank in Chicago.  In 1975 they were among the first residents of Lake Barrington Shores.

Doris was a devout member of Transfiguration Church in Wauconda.  In 1984 she was one of 3 founding members of the St Joseph Lay Carmelites.   Today, there are 25 members.   Doris was a volunteer at Northwest Community hospital.   She loved to play bridge, tennis, and bowl.

Doris is survived by her son, Bill DeVerna (Margo Lasher); and daughter Jayne Tizzano (Peter); grandchildren, Joni Gilles (Dan), Joseph DeVerna, and Jennifer DeVerna; and two great grandchildren Zachary Gilles, and Grace Gilles.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held for Doris at Transfiguration Church, 316 W. Mill St. Wauconda on Friday, March 15 at 11:00am.   Memorial contributions in Doris’ honor may be forwarded to St. Joseph Lay Carmelites, 11272 Song St., Dyer, Indiana 46311.
