Do’s and Don’ts at Funerals

Do's and Don'ts

Finding yourself at a funeral service for the first time can be an overwhelming experience. Additionally, what many first-timers worry about is the preparation, for example, what to wear, say, do, and even where to sit can all be questions and concerns that people have. Fortunately, if these are concerns of yours then you have come to the right place. Below we will break down all there is to know before attending your next funeral service, so read on! When looking for funeral homes in Barrington, IL we recommend paying us a visit in our location so that we may assist you in any way that you need. We are always happy to help and work with new customers!

Attire

One of the biggest things that many people get tripped up on when preparing for their first funeral service is what to wear. While this can tend to vary based on what type of funeral service you are going to, it’s always a good idea to play it safe and go the traditional route, unless instructed otherwise. This means that your outfit should be mostly black, and it should also be formal attire. We recommend staying away from any bright colors or crazy patterns as this can cause attention to be drawn toward your outfit rather than the service at hand. Additionally, it’s always recommended to avoid any outfit that could be perceived as revealing or inappropriate in any way. Again, we don’t want to draw attention in our direction.

Where to Sit

Another issue that many people encounter when trying to prepare for a funeral is deciding on where they should sit. Truthfully, finding a place to sit at a funeral is pretty easy so long as you follow some basic rules. The major rule to adhere to is that typically the first two rows at a funeral are usually reserved only for the immediate family. This means that as long as you avoid those two rows, you are free to sit anywhere else that you’d like. However, and this is important, if you find that you are running late to the service then we highly recommend that when you arrive at the funeral you utilize the side aisles when looking for a seat. This is because if you are late then the service has most likely already started and taking a side aisle rather than the middle will ensure that you do not disrupt the service.

Avoid Being Late

A lot of people get stressed about what they should be saying when at a funeral. Truthfully, it is very unlikely that the immediate family will want to say much, so simply expressing your condolences is usually more than enough. Our funeral homes in Barrington, IL are ready to help you!

While sometimes these things happen, it’s always a good idea to try your best to avoid being late when attending a funeral service. In fact, it’s preferable to arrive around 10 to 15 minutes early as this allows you the opportunity to mingle with guests and express your condolences to the immediate family. If you are running late, though, then it’s important that you remember to stick to the side aisle when entering and looking for a seat.

What to Say
