Mark Gibson, age 76, was born June 17, 1946, in Rockford, IL, he passed away peacefully January 11, 2023.
Mark graduated from Valparaiso University and the University of Illinois Medical School. He completed his Emergency Medicine Training at McGill University in Montreal and was in the first group of physicians certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He worked for forty years as an Emergency Physician at various hospitals and was Chair of the Emergency Department at Sherman Hospital and St Joseph Hospital in Elgin, IL.
He served in the US Air Force stationed at Andrews Air Force Base where one of his assignments was to be on the flight line whenever the president departed or arrived on Air Force One.
He sailed the world as a physician for Holland America traveling to all seven continents. He loved being a grandpa, playing tennis, hiking, biking, and reading voraciously on a broad range of topics.
Mark served as president of the Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club. As a Rotarian he co-led a Friendship Exchange to Taiwan and made multiple humanitarian trips to Guatemala.
Mark is survived by his wife Suzanne; daughter, Kristin Kirk; son, Robert Gibson (Talia); and three granddaughters, Eliana, Noa and Annie.
He is preceded in death by his son Jonathan and his parents Robert and Violet (Johnson) Gibson.
Mark was a blessing to his family, his friends, his community and the world. He touched many lives with kindness in his professional and personal lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Mark’s honor to the Rotary Foundation to continue his passion for doing good in the world.
Visitation will be 4-8pm Friday, January 13 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake Cook Road), Barrington. The funeral service will be at 10am Saturday, January 14 at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 E. Main St. (Lake Cook Road), Barrington.
