Alan W. Hopkins, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on April 29, 2025.
Born on June 18, 1933, in Chicago, Alan was the youngest of two sons to Scottish immigrants who came to the United States from Glasgow, Scotland, the late Hugh and Matilda (McArthur) Hopkins. Alongside his older brother Jimmy, he spent his early years embracing scouting and attending the local cinema to watch movies, especially those starring John Wayne.
Alan attended Hirsch High School in Chicago, where he excelled at sports, distinguishing himself in football and wrestling. His success in wrestling earned him a trip to the state championship, a testament to his determination and competitive spirit.
He went on to attend what is now known as Northern Illinois University, where he proudly played on one of the school’s few undefeated football teams. Unfortunately, his time on the gridiron was cut short due to repeated concussions. Still, Alan made a lasting impact at NIU, becoming one of the charter members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. It was through the Greek system that he met the love of his life, Gail, a Tri Sigma sorority sister.
Alan and Gail were married on June 18, 1955, at the Methodist Church in Crystal Lake—becoming the very first couple to be wed at the new church on the corner of Dole and Crystal Lake Avenue. Together, Alan and Gail raised their 3 children, Scott, Shelly, and Brett, in Crystal Lake.
Alan earned his degree in Elementary Education and began his teaching career as a Physical Education teacher in District 15. After earning his master’s degree, he became the principal of Thomas Jefferson Grade School in Hoffman Estates, a role he held from 1976 until his retirement in 1993. Alan was deeply respected by his peers, staff and his students, many of whom were inspired to pursue careers in education themselves.
Outside of work, Alan served as a scout leader, baseball coach and zoning Board Member in Lakewood. He was also a talented painter and enjoyed many rounds of golf over the years. His true joy, however, came from his family. He deeply loved his grandchildren and took great pride in watching them grow, especially as they pursued the sports and activities that brought them happiness.
Alan was a loving father to Scott (Sherry) Hopkins, Shelly (Paul) Hyland, and Brett (Tina) Hopkins; a cherished grandfather to Jason (Melanie) Hopkins, Alex Hopkins, Kaleigh (Kenny) Horney, Andrew Hyland (Angela Lottes), Bradley (Carly) Hyland, Matthew (Kylene) Hopkins, Maxwell (Allie) Hopkins, Madeline Hopkins, and Mitchell Hopkins; and he was blessed with 7 great-grandchildren, Aurora, Annabelle, Cameron, Emmett, Holland, Scottlyn, and Theodore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gail and his brother Jimmy.
