From Lee:

My mom, or Anna Banana to her close friends and family, was known for her big laugh that could turn into a snort, and loving personality. If you have a conversation long enough with her, you were bound to get a “you’re so cute” or, if she didn’t agree with you, a tsk and “whatever”. We always joked that we should play a drinking game for every time she tsked, or said “You're so cute”. But seriously, she was always very complimentary of people, she made everyone feel welcome and knew how to make you feel special.

Mom was very talented and creative. She played guitar and sang in church, along with weddings and funerals. She played Rizzo in Grease and Fiddler on the Roof. She loved to perform and had a voice that would fill up The Woodstock Opera house. Unfortunately, she didn’t pass her talent to her sons.

She also loved to socialize and made friends wherever she went. If you met Mom once you have made a friend for life. She often came to the boys sporting events and spent most of the time chatting with everyone around her. I’d joke with her that she was supposed to be watching the game…she tried but she loved the social part of being a fan a little too much. Cancer stole her ability to go out with Fred and see friends at their favorite spots, and I know that was hard on her.

As a mom, she was always concerned that she didn’t do enough or give us enough. She was a single mother, raising 2 boys without financial support from our dad. What she didn’t realize is, through her example, I learned the value of money, how important it was to save, and how to be responsible and work for what I wanted. She gave my brother and I lots of freedom, we had plenty of chances to get into trouble, but she taught us good values so we didn’t get into “too much trouble”.

Mom remained amazingly positive through it all and it was comforting that she didn’t suffer. Although if she was in pain she wouldn’t let it show, she was a tough little Sicilian lady. She put up a good fight against this terrible disease, being diagnosed 10 years ago. The last couple of days were tough to see her start to struggle but she went very peacefully, with us sitting around her telling stories.

Fred, we can’t thank you enough for giving my Mom the life she always wanted – you were her knight in shining armor. We are forever grateful to you. Thank you for being there for her, through it all. I’m so sorry your story was cut so short. We love you dearly!

One of my favorite songs is “Give Heaven Some Hell” about the passing of a loved one. The opening line - “I Can’t believe you got me in a suit and tie” - I can’t tell you the last time I’ve worn a suit. The last line - “Man it right, Man it ain’t fair”, “I’ll see you again, but till then, Give Heaven Some Hell”

Love you Mom - Give Heaven Some Hell!
