Barbara Ann Methenitis

Barbara Ann (nee Prosser) Methenitis, 90, formerly of Estero, Florida, and Bull Valley, Illinois, passed away in Greenville, SC following a short illness.

She was born November 12, 1933, in East St. Louis, Illinois, the daughter of Dr. Thomas E. and Charlotte E. (Zuroweste) Prosser.

Barbara studied speech therapy at St. Louis University where she met her husband, Thomas. They married on September 17, 1955, in Chicago, where they lived for several years before moving to Aurora, IL to raise their family. Barbara was President of the PTA in Oswego where her children attended school, and she enjoyed the garden club and playing tennis with her husband and friends. In 1979 they relocated to Surrey, England, for three years. While living there, they enjoyed traveling extensively in Europe and Britain. After returning to the US, Barbara and Tom moved to Bull Valley. When Illinois winters became too challenging, they moved to Bonita Springs, Florida where they made many new friends and explored new destinations. Barbara stayed active by volunteering at her church’s resale shop and by cooking meals on Sundays for the youth group at her church, Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Estero. She also volunteered at the Children’s Hospital in Ft. Myers every week. Barbara remained in Florida after her husband passed away but in 2017 decided she wanted to be closer to family. In 2017, on the heels of Hurricane Irma, Barbara moved to Simpsonville, SC, where she enjoyed being less than 10 minutes away from her oldest daughter and her family. Barbara enjoyed volunteering with the prayer shawl ministry at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Simpsonville. She was living independently in her own home when she passed away. Barbara will always be remembered for her warm smile, her kind ways, and her generous spirit. She will be deeply missed by those that knew and loved her.

She is survived by her two sons, Thomas Methenitis and Timothy (Monique Berger) Methenitis; two daughters, Tammy Crabtree and Tracy (Phillip) Lattanzio; six grandchildren: Allison Methenitis, Taryn Methenitis, Zachary (Kamile) Methenitis, Nikki (Daniel) Huber, Tommy (Raven Whelan) Crabtree, and Danielle Lattanzio; a sister, Betty (the late Robert) Concannon; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, her parents, her two brothers (Thomas Prosser III and Albert Prosser) and a sister (Mary Bernadette Pacini).

The visitation will be from 4pm to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 12, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Interment will be in Crystal Lake Memorial Park.
