Bill Fairfield

William H. Fairfield Jr., age 70, of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, passed away on July 13, 2026. Known to family and friends simply as Bill, he was a man of remarkable intelligence, wit, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved.

Bill was a 1978 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was a member of Company F-4 and later Company C-1. It was there that he met the love of his life, Lynn, and together they went on to build an amazing family. Bill served in the Army's Ordnance Corps stationed in Germany and then the United States, earning the Army Commendation Medal in 1982. He left the military with the rank of Captain. His final mission brought his unit in support of the 1984 presidential election, where his bomb disposal team provided critical security support to the United States Secret Service, a fitting and proud close to his military career. He went on to earn his MS from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and became a Certified Financial Planner, building a long career at Morgan Stanley, where his sharp mind, steady judgment, and leadership made him a trusted advisor to clients and mentor to colleagues.

An avid runner, Bill approached distance the way he approached everything else in life, with discipline, humor, and quiet determination. He qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon many times, and pushed himself further still into ultramarathons, including the notoriously grueling Barkley Marathon course. Those who ran alongside him remember not just his endurance, but the way he made even the hardest miles feel lighter with his sense of humor.

His bond with his West Point brothers never faded. Year after year, he returned to the ski slopes with fellow graduates, trading dress uniforms for ski jackets but never the loyalty that came with them.

A devoted sports fan, Bill never missed the Army-Navy football game and could always be found yelling at the TV during Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs games, win or lose. When it was time to unwind, Bill could often be found behind the wheel on his Xbox in Forza, or settling in with an old favorite show. Batman, Happy Days, Bonanza, and The Andy Griffith Show were always cued up and ready to go at a moment's notice.

Bill also loved the open road. He crisscrossed the country on family road trips, always eager for the next mile and the next memory with the people he loved most. That spirit of adventure was matched only by his generosity. He gave everything he could to his children and family, never hesitating to put them first.

Above all, Bill was known for showing up. He coached Little League baseball, and never missed a soccer game, wrestling meet, or gymnastics meet for his kids and later for his grandkids. Whether for a family milestone, a friend in need, or a quiet moment that mattered, he could be counted on. He was always present, always steady, always ready with a joke to ease the moment.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jacqueline Fairfield and William Fairfield. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Fairfield; his sister, Sharon Fairfield; his children, Chris Fairfield (Shannon), Sarah Fairfield Montenigro (Philip), and DJ Fairfield (Katie); and his grandchildren, Colin Fairfield, Evan Fairfield, Owen Fairfield, Elizabeth Montenigro, Eddie Fairfield, and Calvin Fairfield.

Visitation will be Friday, August 21, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a prayer service and military honors at 7 p.m. all at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 941 S. Old Rand Road, Lake Zurich.

Funeral Mass will be Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 33 S Buesching Road, Lake Zurich.

Bill will be remembered for his brilliance, his humor, his loyalty, and the countless miles he ran; always finding a way to keep going and always finding a way to be there.

Duty, Honor, Country - the values West Point instilled in him at eighteen never left him. He simply widened their reach, spending the rest of his life in faithful service to the family and friends he loved most.
