Charles Raymond Tonge age 76, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.
Married on Valentine's Day in 1969 for 54 years to the cherished love of his life, Pam. He is also survived by his beloved daughter, Alicia Kelly, dearest grandchildren Grace Tyler and Blair Tyler Kelly.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Gary (Rita) Estes and niece Cary (David) Speicher and nephew Robert Estes and grand nephews and niece Ace Speicher and Parker and Olive Estes. He is also survived by an extraordinary group of loyal friends.
Charles graduated from North Park College with a degree in Economics, attended law School at DePaul and was an outstanding Marine. He started his banking career December, 1971, at 1st National Bank of Barrington with no specific area to place him and was named President 12 years later at 37, only the 6th President in the bank's history and the youngest President of a National Bank in Illinois history.
Charles was made Chairman of the Board 2 years later when Harris Bank purchased Barrington. Bank of Montreal then purchased Harris in 1993 and asked Chuck to come downtown in March 1994, as Executive Vice President in charge of all their community banks. In 2003, he was named Vice Chairman until his retirement in April, 2009.
Charles was a member of The Economic Club of Chicago, on the Boards of The Bank Administration Institute and The Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation. He was a member of Rotary Club of Barrington, United Way, YMCA, and The Pontiac-Oakland Club International.
He collected 1963 Pontiacs, including two race cars. He and Pam Traveled throughout the Midwest racing & enjoyed summer cruise nights all over the Chicago area.
Chuck & Pam maintained a house in the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina for over 35 years.
A visitation for Charles will be held from 10:00 am. until the service at 11:30 am. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at Davenport Family Funeral Home 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Road) Barrington, Illinois 60010. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chuck's name to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.
