Denise Diann Mitchell (nee Bialas), age 86, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 23, 2025.
Throughout her life, Denise loved traveling, photography, and hosting lively dinner parties for her many groups of friends. As a consummate hostess, she also organized gatherings in service of her civic engagement and a member of Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.).
Denise was born in Chicago on March 6, 1939. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Illinois College ‘61, married Robert “Craig” Sallenback, and raised her three children in Elk Grove Village. As the children neared adulthood, Denise returned to the workforce, choosing to participate in the nonprofit industry as a manager at the American Academy of Pediatrics and then a director at the American Society of Safety Engineers.
In 1996, Denise married Don Mitchell; they traveled extensively during retirement, enjoying the sights and filling many photo albums to share her enjoyment with everyone.
Frequently, Denise and Don would invite their children and grandchildren to join them. Over her life, Denise formed many friendships everywhere she went, from Chicago, Illinois College, Elk Grove Village, Barrington, and Naples, FL. Denise’s family will warmly strive to emulate her grace, elegance, and consistent amiability.
Survived by her beloved husband of 28 years, Donald Mitchell, her loving children: Debra Stellato, Stephen (Kristin) Sallenback, and James (Natalie) Sallenback; and her dear grandchildren, Hannah, Robert, Nathan, Emily, and James. Step-daughter Debra (Kurt) Horn and step-grandchildren, Joseph (Daisy) Horn, Jessica (Ali) Medina. Sister, Ginger (Quentin) Young, and cousin Fred (Joan) Herzog, as well as nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her parents, Julius “James” and Jeannine (née Lechowicz) Bialas, and her step-son, Joseph Mitchell.
The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to Journey Care, caregivers from Home Instead, Visiting Angels, and especially to Agnes Korybowski, her dear friend and caregiver.
A memorial visitation for Denise will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington, 6 Brinker Rd, Barrington, IL 60010.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Denise’s name may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), 28 West 44th Street, Suite 609, New York, NY 10036.
