Donald Philip Rubino

Donald Philip Rubino, MD, FACP, age 90, of Barrington, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on August 19, 2026, in Marion, Iowa, surrounded by his family. Don was born on August 26, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Frank and Angelina Rubino.

Don was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He grew up in Chicago where he met his wife, Barb, in high school. They celebrated 71+ wonderful years together. He raised 5 beautiful and successful children, of whom he was very proud. He was an avid tennis player, embraced gardening in retirement, loved to travel, and was a voracious reader. Although appearing very serious, Don also had a fun-loving attitude and joking nature when he was with his family.

Don always knew he wanted to practice medicine. After medical school and his residency, he began his career by serving his country in the United States Army in Fort Rucker, AL, before returning to the Chicagoland area to begin his private practice in internal medicine. As a physician, he dedicated much of his life to medicine, leadership, teaching, and service. He served as Regional Medical Director for Advocate Health Care and Vice President of Medical Affairs at Lutheran General Hospital. He was also President and CEO of Lutheran General Medical Group and held numerous teaching and clinical leadership roles,including Faculty Attending Physician and Supervising Internist for the Residency Program and Ambulatory Care Internal Medicine Unit at Nesset Health Center and Lutheran General Hospital. He had a focused interest in faith and ethics within healthcare, which drove much of his practice. His philosophy was treating the patient as a whole: mind, body, and spirit.

His academic appointments included Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Chicago and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois. He was affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American Society of Internal Medicine, Medical Group Management Association, American College of Physician Executives, American College of Physicians, American Heart Association, American Group Practice Association, and Society of General Internal Medicine. He received multiple accolades and awards and was especially proud of receiving the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus/Faculty Member Award for Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

A member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Don lived a full and generous life.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara A. Rubino (nee Neubaum), whom he married in Chicago on January 15, 1955; his children, Sheryl Goldberg (Mike), Danielle Kelsay (Troy), Donette Bevins (Ron), and Donald Rubino, Jr. (Jill); his grandchildren,Michael Goldberg, David Goldberg, Michelle Waymire, Elecya McClung, Philip Rubino, Christopher James Taylor, Quintin Kelsay, Bailey Kelsay, and Kelli Rubino; his great-grandchildren, MaKayla McClung, Penny Goldberg, Piper Goldberg, LilliMcClung, and Harper Waymire; and his sister, Carol Vail.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teri Rubino; his sisters, Estelle Jacklin and Marie Accettura; and his brother, Frank Rubino.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 29, 2026, followed by a memorial service at 2:00PM. Both will be held at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 401 E. Main Street, Barrington, Illinois 60010. Pastor Jana Kay Chwalisz will officiate. A private burial with family is planned.
