Donald William Salerno

Donald William Salerno, 92, of McHenry, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026. He was born on June 19, 1934, in Aurora, Illinois, to Henry and Susan (Volpendesta) Salerno.

Donald proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, enlisting at the age of 18. He was stationed in South Korea, where he worked as a jet engine mechanic. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career with Northern Illinois Gas Company until his retirement.

On September 21, 1957, Donald married Donna Frederiksen. Together, they shared 69 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, and faith.

Donald was a kind, mild-mannered man who led by example. He was a devoted husband and father who took great pride in caring for his family and their home. He believed in taking care of what he had and doing things the right way, values he passed along to his children and grandchildren.

Being a grandpa was one of Donald's greatest joys. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and could often be found cheering them on at their sporting events. He was proud of each of them and enjoyed being part of their lives. As his family grew, so did his joy, and he treasured his role as a great-grandpa.

Donald was also a faithful member of his church, where he generously gave his time volunteering at the food pantry and assisting with the prayer shawl ministry. His willingness to help others was simply part of who he was.

He remained proud of his service in the Marine Corps throughout his life and enjoyed collecting old-fashioned model cars. Whether he was tending to his home, spending time with family, or lending a hand at church, Donald found happiness in the simple things that mattered most.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Donna; his children, Maureen (Wayne) Fairchild and Jeffrey (Michelle) Salerno; his daughter-in-law, Irene (Peter Margiotta) Salerno; his grandchildren, Haley, Slone, Charlie, Ashley, Kayla, Adam, Bailey, and Tyler; and his great-grandchildren, Alexandra "Lexi," Beckett, Flora, and Emmett. He is further survived by his sister, Nancy, and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy, in 2008; his parents; and his sister, Mary Ann.

Donald leaves behind a family who will remember him not only for the life he lived, but for the example he set as a husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa. His steady presence, gentle nature, and love for his family will be deeply missed.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10am until a service at 11am on Thursday, September 24 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 Pathways Ct., Crystal Lake.   Urn burial with military honors will follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park.
