Doris Smith

Lake Wales, Florida,Doris Caesar Smith, 95, died peacefully in her home at Mountain Lake near Lake Wales, Florida on February 11th. She was born on June 25, 1914 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin and grew up in Los Angeles, California. Later Doris moved to Chicago where she attended Northwestern University. While at Northwestern she met her future husband, Lyman W. Smith, MD. Doris and Lyman spent most of their lives in Barrington. Lyman preceded Doris in death in 1991. Early in her adult life Doris developed a passion for the art and design world. As a daughter of Orville Caesar, an inventor and co-founder of the Greyhound Corporation, she had the opportunity to travel extensively and discovered her innate talent and love for interior design. She was an early member of the American Society of Interior Designers and she was a Life Member of the Antiquarian Society of the Art Institute of Chicago. Doris was also a long time member of the Barrington Chapter of the Garden Club of America. She, along with her sister, Athalie Littell Ballard, won the Garden Club's prestigious Fenwick Award in 1986. Doris was a woman of great energy and determination. She was loved by all who knew her and was deeply respected for her generosity and grace. She is survived by her sister, Athalie Ballard, Naples, Florida; her four children, Stephanie Gould of Ketchum, Idaho; Lyman Wood Smith of Palm Desert, California; Orville Smith of La Jolla, California; Athalie Derse of Lake Forest, Illinois; her eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services and Interment will be private in Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington. Memorials may be made to: Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutrboarders.org.
