Duane Michael Hartwig

Duane Michael Hartwig, 65, passed away quickly and peacefully on September 4, 2026, with his loving family by his side.

Duane was born on September 12, 1960, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Hazel and Norman Hartwig. He graduated from Barrington High School and went on to spend more than 45 years working in the family trucking business. Throughout the years, Duane wore many hats—as a truck driver, tow truck driver, mechanic, shop manager, and, as those who knew him would say, a true jack of all trades.

Duane was the kind of person who could always be counted on. Day or night, he was there to help anyone in need, making sure people were safe and never hesitating to lend a hand, or offer to cut your grass. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. His generosity, dependability, and willingness to help others were just a few of the qualities that made him so deeply loved.

Outside of work, Duane’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He loved camping, fishing, motorcycles and making memories with the people he loved most. His family was his greatest pride and joy, and he will be remembered for the love, laughter, and countless memories he gave them.

Duane is survived by his beloved wife, Judith; his children, whom he loved so very much, Jessica (Michael) Rostan, Elizabeth (Thomas) Hoff, Stephanie (Arturo) Conte, and Rodger Sutek; and his most precious gifts, his grandchildren, Johanna Rostan, Gianna Conte, William Sutek, and Elenor Sutek. Duane was also very excited for his next future granddaughter, Baby Conte, due in October.

He is also survived by his siblings, Linda Hartwig Lanning, Gerald (Christy) Hartwig, Beverly (Robert) Crylen, Pam Hartwig, Thomas (Victoria) Hartwig, and Mary (Brent) Turner, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved brother and sister-in-law, Norman Keith and Tammie Hartwig, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 13, from 1 PM until 7 PM at Davenport Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St., Barrington, Illinois.

Visitation will resume on Monday, September 14, from 9 AM until the funeral service at 10 AM at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 720 Dundee Ave., Barrington, Illinois, followed by burial at Evergreen Cemetery, 610 Dundee Ave., Barrington, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Duane’s honor to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation or the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.

Duane leaves behind a lifetime of love, family, friendship, and memories. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
