Edward Gerard Hartigan

Edward Gerard Hartigan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on October 9, 2026, just three days after his 87th birthday.Born in Chicago on October 6, 1939, Ed was a man of remarkable intellect, boundless curiosity, and an appreciation for the finer things in life. A graduate of Wauconda High School and Loyola University Chicago, he built a long and distinguished career that spanned education, scientific research, and business leadership. He began his professional life as a teacher, went on to become a scientific researcher and inventor, earning 18 patents, and ultimately established himself as a successful marketing business executive. He retired in 2003 as Senior Vice President for ITT Educational Services. Throughout his career, he combined analytical rigor with creativity, innovation, and an ability to bring people and ideas together. Ed’s life took him to several corners of the world, including Chicago, Boston, London, and Indianapolis. Wherever he lived, he embraced new experiences, new perspectives, and the opportunity to learn. An avid international traveler, he particularly cherished exploring the world alongside his beloved wife, Louise. Their travels reflected Ed’s enduring curiosity and his appreciation for different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. A passionate patron of the arts, Ed served as President of the Indianapolis Opera Board, supporting an art form he deeply admired. He was equally enthusiastic about reading, fine wine, and memorable meals shared with family and friends. A loyal Chicago sports fan, he remained devoted to both the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears, faithfully following the triumphs, disappointments, and enduring traditions of his hometown teams.

Above all, Ed treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Louise (née Kittmann); his daughter, Laura O’Connor, and her husband, Terry; and his son, Jeffrey Hartigan, and his wife, Leslie. He was a proud grandfather to Mallory Hartigan and her fiancé, Ryan; Bridgette Procida and her husband, John; Quinlan Hartigan and his wife Madeline; and Jack O’Connor and his fiancé, Matthew. He was a loving great-grandfather to Margot Hartigan, whose presence brought another special joy to the family. He is also survived by his sisters, Norine Keese and Mary Beth Byrne and her husband Greg Byrne. He is preceeded in death by his parents James Edward Hartigan and RoseMary (Palese). Ed will be remembered for his extraordinary professional accomplishments, his love of learning, his enthusiasm for travel and the arts, his appreciation of good food and wine, and, most importantly, the love and devotion he gave to those closest to him. His was a life richly lived, shaped by discovery, achievement, adventure, and enduring relationships. He leaves behind a legacy that extends well beyond his many professional contributions: a family enriched by his love, a world made better through his talents and service, and countless memories of a life lived with curiosity, distinction, and heart. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
