Eunice Adele (Somerville) George

Eunice Adele George, age 94, passed away on February 19, 2018. She was born on September 29, 1923 and had a long and fruitful life as a nutritionist, elementary school educator, sister, and mother to Ernest Gregory, Vicky Lynn (Kathy Dancy) , and Kevin Joseph (Sharon Sargent), grandmother to Joshua and Morgan George-Dancy.

Eunice was born in Greensboro, Alabama to Ernest and Ellen Somerville. She has survived all her siblings, Addison, Joseph, Ernestine, Anna-Louise, Iola, and Dora. Eunice is a graduate of Wilberforce University and worked for years as a nutritionist in the private sector and ultimately spending the past forty years as a school teacher in the Chicago Public School System, specifically at Bryn Mawr and Douglas Elementary Schools.

Eunice was a versatile and lauded educator whose students, even after graduating from elementary or secondary school, would revisit her years later and applaud her teaching skills and techniques as the “teacher they would never forget.” Eunice, affectionately known as “Mommy” to her children, was a prominent member of the largest African-American sorority groups in the United States, the Alpha Kappa Alphas (A.K.A’s) an organization whose commitment to tackling and solving social issues if of renown fame and without dispute. She was also a vital member of Martin Temple, A.M.E. Zion Church on Chicago’s South Side for many years.

Let’s celebrate her homecoming!! May every heart rejoice and sing!!

Visitation will be Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 4 PM until the 6 PM memorial service at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. (Rte. 176), Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
