Frank J. Dombrowski

Frank J. Dombrowski, 77, of Crystal Lake, passed away suddenly on August 20, 2025. He was born in 1948 in Chicago to Frank and Wanda Dombrowski. Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Karen; children, Jeff (Jennifer) Dombrowski, and Ann (Matthew) Miller; grandchildren, Miles, Elise, Samara, and Cole; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ron and Rich; and dear niece Amanda.

Frank grew up in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood. He had fond memories of his childhood- playing games in the alleys, adventuring solo on the “L” train downtown, and taking road trips with his brothers and uncle across the country. After graduating from Holy Name High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree in social work from Loyola University and later went on to receive his master’s in social work from Loyola as well. Frank was passionate about non-violence and compassion towards others. When he was drafted in 1969, he won his appeal before the draft board as a conscientious objector and his work at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was deemed an alternate form of service. His time and dedication at DCFS, helping children and families, shaped the foundation of his life's work. It was there that he met his future wife, Karen, as well as many lifelong friends.

Frank and Karen married in 1973 and built a beautiful life together, raising their two children, Jeff and Ann. He worked as the first director of the Outpatient Psychiatric Program at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Later, he established a private therapy practice, where he worked tirelessly counseling individuals and families. Despite suggestions from his family, Frank never retired- his work was his calling, and he cared deeply for his clients up until the day he passed.

Outside of his career, Frank's hands were always busy. He was an avid gardener, cook, woodworker, and master of household projects. He was a man who made home-made maple syrup from his trees. He loved exploring the world, taking countless cruises and trips abroad. Frank was an active parishioner at Resurrection Catholic Church for more than 40 years. Above all, Frank treasured his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. His grandchildren brought him immense joy, and he adored spending time with them.

Frank will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, sound advice, and sharp memory of random details, dates, and people. His children knew him as the man who could make a new friend waiting in line at Jewel and one who had an answer to every question- no matter how obscure. His steady loving presence was what was cherished most of all.

Frank's kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love and acceptance towards all those he encountered will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held from 4-9pm Thursday, August 28th at Davenport Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave (Route 176), Crystal Lake.
