George Preston Sutfin

George Preston Sutfin, 81, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2026. The son of the late Vernon and Martha Sutfin, George was born on October 22, 1944, in Elgin, Illinois. He graduated from Dundee Community High School and went on to attend Drake University, where he earned a degree in pharmacy. George enjoyed a long career as a pharmacist with Jewel-Osco, where he worked for 43 years.

It was while working at Jewel-Osco that George met Mary Hergert. The two were married on December 2, 1978, and shared 47 years of marriage. Throughout his life, George enjoyed Boy Scouts, gliders, camping trips, spending time at the family cabin on Little Traverse Lake in Michigan, listening to music, and watching Chicago sports. He took a great interest in world events and was passionate about the issues that mattered to him. Above all, George was immensely proud of his sons and their accomplishments, and he treasured his role as “Grandpa George” to Everett and Greta.

George is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, David (Emily Beaudin-Sutfin) and Tim (Brian Christie); his grandchildren, Everett and Greta; and his brothers, Charlie (Kathleen Brown) and Bill (Gwen). He is also survived by many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John; his sisters-in-law, Jan and Candy; and his niece, Wendy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Northern Illinois Food Bank or Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at a later date.
