A memorial service for Gilbert C. "Gil" Murdock, Barrington area resident since 1940 will be held on Saturday, February 13th at 10:30 a.m. at the Davenport Funeral Home, 149 W. Main Street, Barrington with a visitation beginning at 9:30. Born in Chicago on January 21, 1927, Mr. Murdock was a 1946 graduate of Barrington High School. He passed away at home on January 26, 2010, and is survived by a brother, Eugene (Gloria) Murdock of Wauconda, Mark Murdock, his son, of Valparaiso, Indiana, his son Kirk Murdock of Deer Park, and his daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and T. Michael Murphy of Simsbury, Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Shirley A. Murdock, nee Bauman, and his brother, Robert Murdock of Wauconda. Gil was a WW II veteran who served in the US Army 425th Quartermaster Company on detached service in Naples, Italy. He was also a member of the US Army Air Force Reserve until 1950 and was a member of the American Legion Post #158 in Barrington for over 62 years. Gil was a foreman for Commonwealth Edison, retiring after 45 years of service in 1992. Gil and Shirley made their home in Deer Park in 1959, Gil having served as a member of the Village Planning Commission and the Village Board. Mr. Murdock was active with the Boy Scouts of America and earned his Eagle Scout in 1945. His service to the community and country included leading War Bond drives and the improvement of the Roy E. Wilmering Scout Cabin. Later in life, he enjoyed taking Scouts and his family on trips camping, fishing, and canoeing. Gil also enjoyed traveling to Canada and Europe, visiting France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Austria. He was a proponent of wildlife and environmental conservation and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Some of his favorite walks were in the Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve. A kind, loving, and devoted father and brother, he will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Citizens for Conservation, 459 W. Highway 22, Barrington, IL 60010.
