Hai Chan Chung

Hai Chan Chung, 93, of Cary, formerly of Chicago, passed away on June 21, 2026.

Hai was born on February 25, 1933, in Seoul, Korea, to Insoo Chung and Suck Eon Woo. After earning his bachelor's degree from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, he came to the United States and built a successful life through hard work and determination. He owned Hana East, Hana Sakura, and Oriental Mart in Chicago, where he spent more than 20 years serving customers and sharing his love of food.

On August 22, 1964, Hai married Yoon Kim. They spent more than 60 years together before Yoon's passing on June 5, 2025.

Hai enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved traveling, reading, listening to music, especially opera, and trying new foods. He was always on the go and never lacked energy. Strong-willed and opinionated, Hai always let you know what he was thinking. He loved a good conversation and could talk with just about anyone. His quick sense of humor, generous heart, and outgoing personality made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.

Family was important to Hai, and he loved spending time with those he cared about. He leaves behind many happy memories and stories that will continue to be shared for years to come.

Hai is survived by his daughters, Nancy Chung (Lenny Riddell) and Grace (Brian) Carr; grandchildren, Sarah Carr and Ethan Carr; and siblings, Hai Ryung Chung, and Hai Syung Chung.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Hai Myung Chung, Hai Soon Lee, and Hai Kyung Chung.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yoon, and by his parents.
