Herbert P. Schmidt

Herbert Paul Schmidt "Herb" passed away in Barrington, IL on April 30, 2026.

Herb was born to parents, Carolina (nee Schinabeck) and Roman Schmidt in Chicago, IL on March 18, 1937, and was the youngest brother to Walter and Roman Jr.

Herb graduated from Lane Technical High School in 1955 and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in 1966. He achieved his Registered Professional Engineering License on his first attempt in 1971.

He married Mary Regina Bader "Jean" on September 29, 1962, and they began their family in their 9-flat apartment on Kenmore Avenue. Herb attended night school and worked full time at Curtiss Candy Co. and then Morgan Industrial Service. While working at Victor Comptometer Corp., he served as President for the American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE).

Taking a plant engineering manager position at A.O. Smith Harvestore, the family moved to St Charles, IL in 1978. Herb’s love of water and boating meant the weekends were spent in Fox Lake, IL, where he restored three wood cabin cruisers. He eventually switched to fiberglass hull boats with his favorite being their 36’ Trojan Tri-Cabin.

When Herb retired from Kester Solder in 2006, Jean and Herb had already moved to their Pistakee Lake house in Fox Lake where they enjoyed their beautiful sunsets.

Herb is survived by his loving daughters Barbara (Darren) Courville and Margaret (Ken) Wilson; cherished grandchildren Allison Courville, Emma (Jace) Wilson Parker, and Logan Wilson, and his dog, Roxann.

After 61 years of marriage, Jean passed away October 24, 2023.

In lieu of donations, please raise a ‘glass” (Southern Comfort or a margarita which were his preferred choices) in celebration for a life well lived and share a memory of Herb below.

Memorial lunch for family and friends will be held in June.
