Irene Sass, 95, went to be home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 22, 2026. She passed away peacefully at home with her family near.

Irene was born on June 5, 1930 in Bensenville, Illinois to Paul and Edna Grischow. She worked at Mars Chocolate factory as a young woman to help support her parents and to care for her invalid father. Irene married the love of her life, Norman Sass in 1951. In 1957, after being displaced by the O’Hare airport expansion, Norm and Irene moved to Woodstock, Illinois to continue farming. Together they raised 4 children.

On a Sunday morning in 1968, Irene and Norman made the decision to follow Jesus and serve Him faithfully the rest of their lives. They began attending the Woodstock Assembly of God church where they led their children as well as many others to follow and love Jesus. Irene was a faithful wife and mother, selfless in her devotion to the farm as well as her family and friends. She was compassionate and respectful, always speaking kindly of others. Irene served in the church as a leader in girls and women's ministries.She also served as a 4-H leader in her local community.

Irene was very creative and made her own clothes as well as clothes for her children and grandchildren. She was very skillful with crafts such as quilting, stained glass, ceramics, and photography. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and she was a gracious hostess.

Irene is survived by her brother Fred (Jackie)Grischow. She is also survived by her children Sheryl (Dwight) Morris, Susan ( Mark) Fringer, Sandra (John) Meyer, Dan (Denise) Sass. Irene has 10 grandchildren: Christine (Jason) Jackson, Michelle (Dalton) Rhodes, Jeremy (Marnie) West, Renee (Jeff) Stromberger, Sharon (Nathan) Doll, Andrew (Aimee) Fringer, Doug (Katy) Meyer, Ryan (Valerie) Sass, Josh (MaryPat) Sass, Ben (Michaela) Sass. Irene was blessed with 25 great grandchildren: Evelyn, Julia, Haylee, Olivia, Davis, Jacob, Mason, Calvin, Addison, Norah, Milo, Alice, Caroline, Hattie, Jane, Orrin, Imogene, Hank, Rinn, Ada, Harper, Grant, Catherine, Wesley and Flora.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Norman of 68 years as well as 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who were with her during her final days. The tender loving care and concern given by these special people will always be remembered with gratitude.

Visitation will be Monday, March 9, 2026, from 10 a.m. to time of Funeral 11 a.m. all at Davenport Family Funeral Home. 419 E Terra Cotta Avenue, Crystal Lake, IL 60014.

Burial to follow at McHenry County Memorial Park.
