James “Jim” Thompson, of Lake Barrington, passed away peacefully at home on August 11, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 22, 1942, in Chicago, to Curtis and Helen Thompson and grew up in Evanston.
Jim attended Loyola Academy and graduated from Evanston Township High School. He later earned his MBA from the University of Georgia, becoming a longtime and proud University of Georgia fan.
Jim proudly served in the United States Army. He remained active in the veteran community throughout his life, serving as a board member of the Veterans Group at Lake Barrington Shores. He also served as a trustee for the Village of Lake Barrington and was an active member of the Lake Barrington Shores Golf Group.
Professionally, Jim worked in advertising and marketing. He worked for several advertising agencies and eventually owned his own agency. He later served as Marketing Director for AAA Chicago Motor Club for 10 years until 2011.
Jim had a lifelong love of golf and enjoyed playing whenever he could. Among his many memorable golfing experiences were opportunities to play in Ireland and Scotland. He will be remembered for his service to his country, his involvement in his community, his love of golf and the University of Georgia, and most of all, his devotion to his family.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Virginia “Ginny” Thompson; son, Jason (Debbie) Thompson; grandsons, Arthur and Max Thompson; his brothers, Michael and Curtis Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 from 10 AM until the funeral mass at 11 AM at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 135 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich, IL 60047. Military Honors to follow. Interment will be private.
