Janet Dedevi Adzo Gbewonyo (nee Amudzi), 66, of Atiavi and KƐdzi of the Volta Region, Republic of Ghana, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026 surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren.
Janet was born on August 24, 1959 in Akim Oda, Eastern Region of Ghana and grew up in Nima, Accra with her mother, siblings and cousins. In Accra, she attended Kanda Primary and Middle school successfully completing school in 1975 with a Middle School Leaving Certificate. She went on to further her education at Kings’ College where she graduated in 1978.
In 1977, Janet met the love of her life, Clement Kafui Gbewonyo, while attending Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Nima. Shortly after meeting, their relationship began and they were later married on August 8, 1981.
In January 1984, Janet and Clement traveled to the Marshall Islands under a United Nations Appointment and then settled in the Republic of Palau where they raised their children and built a community of friends and family. Janet spent most of her career working with the Ben Franklin Department Store of Western Caroline Trading Company in Koror, Palau as a supervisor in the Clothing department until her retirement in March of 2026. After retirement, Janet and Clement planned to return home to Ghana in the summer before her untimely passing.
When Janet had a few moments of down time, she enjoyed watching her African shows and socializing with friends. She had a passion for fashion design, was an active member in the Palau Assembly of God Church and always enjoyed cooking and hosting guests for any occasion, and was known for her great tasting food and proudly introducing family, friends and strangers to authentic Ghanaian cuisine. Above all else, Janet loved spending time with her family.
Janet is survived by her 2 sons and 4 daughters, Kofi (Naomi) Anabisa, Christoph (Sarah) Gbewonyo, Christabel Gbewonyo, Barbara Gbewonyo, Yumelynn Santos, Abigail (Jevon) Maddox; 9 grandsons, Kingsley, Desmond, Marvin, Kingston, Jagger, Luc Emmanuel, Marc Ellis, Jaxten, Jirah; 10 Siblings, Rockefeller Amudzi, David Cashier Amudzi, Akpene Amudzi, Dodzi Mathew Amudzi, Wonder Dede Amudzi, Wendy Korkor Amudzi, Jerifa Amudzi, Diou Donne Amudzi, Abednego Amudzi, Florence Letsu.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reverand Daniel Rod Tetevi Amudzi and Grace Yawa Egbemenyo; and her brother George Awuku Dogbey.
Visitation and wake will be held on Friday, July 17 beginning at 3:30pm until 7:30pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Old Rand Rd., Lake Zurich, IL 60047. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, July 18, beginning at 9:30am. Private Interment to follow, taking place on the same date as her father’s passing.
