Joann Josephine Hecker

Joann Josephine Hecker, 89 years of age and resident of Crystal Lake, Illinois, left this life surrounded by her loving family on May 12, 2025.

Cherished daughters of the late Stephen and Josephine Kurzydlo. Fond sister of the late Raymond Kurzydlo (Dorothy Kurzydlo), the late Roy, and Barbara Hecker.

She was born and raised in Chicago, where she attended many Cubs games with her many uncles and family. She attended St. Stanislous High School. It was there she met the love of her life, Robert William Hecker. The two became engaged in front of Buckingham Fountain and were married in September 1956. They shared 69 ½ beautiful years of dedicated marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure.

Together they raised their family in Mount Prospect, living just across the street from St. Emily’s Church and School, where Joann volunteered regularly. After her children were grown, she worked as a school nurse at River Trails Junior High School as a health school nurse.

Joann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children: Susan (the late Tim Cannon), Sharon (the Late Craig Kovar), Robert, and Brian Hecker; her grandchildren: Marisa (Matt Peterson), Michael, Christine, Katie (Brandon Whittier), Alex, Bobby, Garrett, Michael Louis (Terri Cannon), Rachel (Jonathan Estes), Lauren, and Bobbie; and her great-grandchildren: Nico, Cole, Jack, Isla, Cason, Noah, Aubrey, and Brayden. Special Aunt to Casey, Billy, Patrick, and Matt.

Joann had a deep love for her family and cherished the time they spent together, whether at home or on their many family vacations—especially to St. Germain, Wisconsin, where weekly adventures were shared with grandparents and uncles. Their travels and curiosity took them to many places- cities in Europe, Hawaii, and many of The States.

Twenty-six years ago, Joann and Bob moved to Crystal Lake, where she once again made a house a home. She entertained often, filling her space with warmth, laughter, and delicious food. She enjoyed cooking and was known for her famous cheesecakes and hot milk cake, which she shared with friends and neighbors, Joann also enjoyed gardening—her yard blooming with vibrant, colorful flowers.

A creative spirit, Joann’s hands were rarely idle. She lovingly crocheted Afghans for each family member, and her embroidered artwork and photographs are proudly displayed throughout her home. She exercised regularly and even led fitness classes, where she formed many close friendships.

Joann’s life was a beautifully woven tapestry, stitched together with her love of God, Robert, her deep devotion to family, and her unwavering friendship to many. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. We will love and miss you forever, till we meet again.
