John T. Gurley, age 84, was born in Lucedale, MS to George and Jeanette Gurley - the baby of seven children (3 girls & 4 boys). He spent his early years with his granddad.
John came to Chicago in the mid 50’s for work. On March 17, 1958, he went on a blind date with Patricia Thomas. The next 45 years were filled with love, loss and laughter until her passing in March of 2003 at their home in Tennessee. Together they raised and spoiled their only daughter, Linda, and many cats and dogs.
He will be remembered as a loving, devoted, family man who was always willing to help family, friends and strangers with his trucks, either providing rides, pulling them out of the snow or hauling band equipment. He worked as a mechanic then a machinist until his stroke in 1989. After that, he gladly took on the role of chauffer for Pat and Linda.
John accepted Jesus as his Lord and looked forward to seeing the love of his life, Patricia, and grandson, Anthony, in heaven.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Linda, his in-laws, John and Annette Wechner as well as dozens of generations of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 30 at 9:00am followed by a memorial service at 11:00am. Interment will be private.
