John "Jack" J Mackin

October 6, 1929 — April 17, 2024

Cary, IL

John “Jack” J. Mackin, 94, of Cary, IL passed away peacefully after being under Journey Care Hospice care for over 2 years. Jack was born October 6, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York to the late John and Alice Mackin.

While in high school, Jack joined the US Army Air Training Division in November of ’46 where he earned a World War II Victory Medal. After coming home in July of ’47, Jack completed his high school education at Maine Township in Des Plaines, IL.

Jack met Doris at Northern Illinois University in January of ’51 and the couple married in October the same year. After starting their family, they moved to Rolling Meadows, IL in 1955, where Jack served as one of the city’s first Aldermen.

Jack retired from his lifelong career in the medical electronic diagnostic industry in ’95. After retirement, Jack enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, boating, and traveling. He was an avid mystery novel reader, music lover and car enthusiast.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of nearly 73 years, Doris H. Mackin; children, MaryEllen Boswell, Maureen (Stephen) Olker, John (Robin) Mackin, and Andrew (Joe Garcia) Mackin; grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Olker, Jennifer (Brian) Willig, Amanda (Justin) Yarber, Kathrine Mackin, Kelsey Mackin, John Mackin; great grandchildren, David and Carrie Willig, Shane Seyer, Willow Olker, Makenna Yarber; nephew, Jim (Theresa) Mackin; nieces, Beth Mackin and Mary Ng; and cousins, Ed (Joan) Neuschler, Paul (Debbie) Neuschler. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Mackin; infant son, Donald Mackin; brother, Jim Mackin; nephew, Bill Mackin; son-in-law, Michael Boswell; and cousins, Bob Rywick and Tom (living wife, Carol) Rywick.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Journey Care staff and additional caregivers that helped them so much during Jack’s time with them, especially Carole, Nancy, Edie, Heather, Sarah, and Lynn.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Jack’s name to the Addus Hope Foundation.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 9am until the time of the Memorial Service at 11am at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave, Crystal Lake, IL 60014.
