Joris D.E.M. van Zinnicq Bergmann was born on February 2,1920, in Vught, The Netherlands, the fourth of six children of Therese and Eugene van Zinnicq Bergmann. His older brothers Harry and Robbie and younger brother Floris, along with his older sister Therese, preceded him in death. His younger sister, Jeanne, still resides in The Netherlands, as do his two sisters-in-law, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, many of whom he saw on his last visit to Holland five years ago. He met his wonderful wife Dolores Krieter at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina on VE Day in 1945. They were separated by the war and his deployment with the Dutch Marines to the Dutch East Indies, but were ultimately reunited and married in Holland on October 14, 1947. They had three children, Carol, Don and Henri. Don is married to Sharon (Doss) and they have the only grandchild, Amanda,"" whom Joris always referred to as """"the Great Amanda"","" They were married for almost 55 years before Dolores passed away on August 17, 2002. Joris retired as a small business tax collector for the State of Illinois, after also having worked numerous other jobs, including managing a Dutch rubber plantation on the Island of Sumatra, managing two different motels, working in the accounting offices of Ovaltine and Continental Casualty, as credit manager for the O'Hare Inn, running the Credit Union for Alberto Culver and as catering manager of the Pheasnt Run resort. Upon retirement, he and Dolores moved to Petaluma, CA, which he always referred to as Paradise."""" He became very involved with their parish"", St. James Catholic Church, and worked tirelessly for St. Vincent de Paul, serving as President of their chapter and West Coast Disaster Chair. He was also involved in establishing COTS (Committee on the Shelterless) in Petaluma, providing food, shelter and support for over 200 homeless in Petaluma each week. He enjoyed watching sports and playing cards, especially pinochle, gin rummy and bridge,"" where he was known for bidding """"weak two's and transfers."""" He was a great story teller"", and a wonderful father, not only to his children but to their many high school and college friends.
