Kathleen Mary (Walsh) Sachtschale, age 88, of Barrington, IL, passed away peacefully at Deer Park Village Senior Living on July 10, 2025. Born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 18, 1936, Kathy lived a life committed to her family, faith and nursing career. She is survived by her daughters, Madonna (Paul) Houser and Julie (Dave) Esau; daughters-in-law, Ellen (Rick) Sachtschale and Johnna (Tim) Sachtschale; and her spirit lives on through her adored grandchildren (10) and great-grandchildren (8).
She is preceded in death by the heartbreaking loss of her three sons, Rick, Tim and John; her beloved husband of 64 years, Richard (Dick); her parents, James and Catherine Walsh; and her siblings, James Jr., Thomas, Sister Margaret Mary Walsh, and Marilyn Goeke.
Kathy was the second of five siblings growing up in St. Louis. She was a proud alumna of Our Lady of the Presentation School in Overland, the Incarnate Word Academy, and the School of Nursing at St. John’s Mercy, St. Louis.
Upon being introduced via love-letter correspondence by mutual friends, Kathy and Dick fell in love, married, and moved to the Chicagoland area in 1958. After settling in Mt. Prospect in 1967, she and Dick raised five children. She was also an active parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church, and St. Raymond Catholic Church in Mt. Prospect.
Kathy practiced nursing at Fahey Medical Center for 23 years and went on to study at the University of St. Francis, Joliet, where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Health Administration. She served as Director of Surgical Services at both Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington and Mercy Hospital in Aurora, retiring in 2001.
Kathy and Dick moved to Lake Barrington Shores in 2000. She spent her retirement years entertaining family, traveling, reading, and baking. She was best known for her lemon meringue pies, Texas cake, and our dad’s favorite sunshine cake. She loved her children and grandchildren passionately, and no matter the sports, musical, Scouting, or extracurricular occasion, she and Dick would both be there with unwavering support and guidance. A patient provider and an eternal optimist, she would light up a room with a quiet Irish smile and a flare for fashion.
We are sure Grandpa is happy to have his dance partner back with a “one-y and a two-y” from Lawrence Welk. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 18th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 N. Ela St. (corner of Ela and Franklin St.). Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Kathy’s name to the charity of your choice.
