Born on April 4, 1923, in Riverside, New Jersey, Lawrence spent his formative years in Camden, NJ. It was there he worked as a child during the Great Depression for Western Union as a telegraph messenger, in addition to selling newspapers. It was also in Camden that he later worked as a fireman for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, until his enlistment into the Navy.
In February of 1943, at the age of 19, Lawrence enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the European and Asiatic-Pacific theaters of the Second World War as an Electrician’s Mate aboard the USS General A. E. Anderson (AP-111), the USS Baxter (APA-94), and the USS Gyatt (DD-712). His service in the Navy continued until his honorable discharge in March of 1946.
It was during his time in the Navy that Lawrence met the love of his life, Violet, at a shipmate's wedding. They married in 1946 in Barrington, IL, where they settled and raised their three children, Lawrence Haines III, Guy Haines, and Sandra (Haines) Boyle.
Throughout his life, Lawrence was known for his humor, work ethic, and craftsmanship. He worked for the Barrington Woodworking Company and the Jewel Tea Company, where he developed and showcased his skills as a carpenter and cabinetmaker. He took great pride in his work, leaving behind a legacy of fine craftsmanship that will be cherished for generations to come.
In his leisure time, Lawrence enjoyed bowling, carving, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an unapologetic lifelong fan of the New York Yankees.
Lawrence leaves behind a loving family, including his three children, six grandchildren, two step grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his kindness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to his family.
