Lelia H. Roeckell

August 31, 1933 — June 19, 2023

Davenport Lake Zurich

Lelia Roeckell, 89, of Huntington Station, NY passed away peacefully at Journeycare Hospice in Barrington, IL. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time she passed. Lelia was born on August 31 st , 1933, in Tuxedo Park, NY to Stanley and Anne Hurlston.

She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1952 and went on to Bellevue Nursing School in New York, where she received her Registered Nurse license. She worked there for a few years and subsequently moved to California, living with her sister Pat and was involved in the opening of the UCLA Medical Center, now the Ronald Reagan Medical Center.

She moved back to New York where she met the love of her life, John Roeckell. They married in 1961 and moved to Long Island, where she lived most of her days. They had 3 children, John Joseph, Mark Christopher and Lelia Marie. She retired from nursing and devoted her life to the raising of her children and being a loving wife to John, who she loved dearly.

When Lelia had any free time, you could always find her with a book in her hand and a crossword puzzle by her side. Reading was her passion, and she had an extensive knowledge of many subjects. Bring up anything and Lelia knew something about it!

She loved sitting around the dining room table and chatting with anyone who would listen as well as talking on the phone with her many friends. Anytime you came to her home, it wasn’t very long before you were deep in conversation with a cup of tea in your hand! Lelia lived a long fruitful life, was loved dearly, and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her sons John and Mark and his wife Sally, her 5 grandchildren, John, Paul, Joseph, Mary, Mark and John, one great grandchild, Brianna, her sister Colleen and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests that donations be made to Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church in Shelter Island NY.

There will be a funeral Mass at 10:30 AM on July 6, 2023, at Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church on Shelter Island.
