Leonard John Nix, age 80, passed away on May 23, 2026, in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He was born on November 12, 1945, in Evanston, Illinois.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Meldrum of Crystal Lake; daughter Gina (Robert) Breen of Chicago; stepson Keith (Anne Kunzen) Copersmet of Woodstock; stepdaughter Melissa (Todd) Ratkowski of Gilberts; and stepdaughter Jessica (Donald) Downing of McHenry. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Barb Nix, nephew Joey Nix, grandson Tyler Ratkowski, and granddaughter Hailey Downing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Eileen Nix, and his two brothers, John and George Nix.
Leonard was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the Army. He spent much of his life doing what he loved, driving big trucks. From his early days driving a beer truck to owning his own semi and later driving low-boy trailers and semi dump trucks, Leonard took great pride in his career. He enjoyed sharing his stories, experiences, and knowledge with everyone around him.
Outside of work, Leonard had a passion for The Bears, classic rock, playing pool with family, fixing anything and everything that needed it (and sometimes didn’t), watching sprint cars at Wilmot Raceway, and go-kart racing. He loved the freedom and excitement racing brought him. After retirement, he continued working with his hands by repairing small engines in his garage, building go-karts for his grandchildren, and working outside on the lawn.
Above all else, Leonard loved his family deeply. His greatest gift was his ability to love unconditionally, always making those around him feel important, welcomed, cherished, and cared for. His kindness, warmth, and steady presence will be remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Interment will be private.
A celebration of life will be held on July 18, 2026, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at the McHenry VFW, 3002 W IL Route 120, McHenry, IL 60051.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leonard’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at: https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html
Leonard will be deeply missed, but his life, love, and legacy will continue to be celebrated and remembered by his family and friends.
