Lila Jane Cantwell

It is with grateful, full and heavy hearts we share the peaceful passing of Lila Cantwell on Sunday, September 7th. Lila was the dearly beloved wife of the late Terry, mother to Scott (Sheila) and Beth (Peter), Mamaw to grandson William, and sister to Earl Jay Hayes (Beverly).

Lila was born to Esther and Earl Hayes, Sr. on May 6th, 1936 in Idabel, Oklahoma. She grew up in a loving, warm home filled with extended family, friends, books, fried okra and strawberry rhubarb cobblers. Throughout her life, her lovely, sweet nature and kind spirit were of particular note to all who knew her. Lila’s bright, beautiful smile and lilting laugh lit up rooms and hearts.

Always an excellent student and voracious reader, she continued her education at Oklahoma State University, where she met the love of her life and our dad, Terry. She later completed her teaching degree with honors at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Later in her career she received her master’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Lila was a primary grade classroom teacher and special education teacher for forty years, across four states, spreading her kindness and love for learning to hundreds of children. Her colleagues in education were her very dear friends.

Across six states our family traveled, making many friends and memories all along the way. Our collection of family stories is gladsome, occasionally mischievous, often hilarious, and forever in our hearts and minds. With Lila and Terry, adventure awaited. We traveled, moved, learned, and laughed together, the four of us.

Lila and Terry enjoyed venturing across America and across the world. She played bridge, enjoyed rounds of golf, exercised at the gym, collected antiques, and had special affinities for chocolate and Frank Sinatra. However, her favorite moments were with family, friends, books, and her dear grandson, Will.

Through these many years her faith was the foundation of all. She was devoted to prayer and fellowship, and joyfully volunteered at all of her churches across this country.

She will be laid to rest at Crystal Lake Memorial Park Cemetery with her husband, Terry.

Lila’s accepting, embracing spirit touched all who knew her. It is with deeply grateful hearts that we had such a tender, loving mother. Our Lila Jane. May she rest in peace.
