Manfred Laupp, age 84, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 28, 2026, at White Oaks at McHenry.
Born on March 3, 1941, in Tübingen, Germany, Manfred was the son of Helene and Pius Weisser. His journey as a master craftsman began at the age of 14 when he entered an apprenticeship as a tool and die maker. Having navigated a challenging childhood in post-war Europe, Manfred developed a resilient and independent spirit that would define his path across the ocean and throughout his life.
In 1961, Manfred moved to America to build a new life. An entrepreneur at heart, he successfully established his own tool and die business in 1971, a venture fueled by his tireless work ethic and a reputation for being one of the most reliable experts in the industry. Later, in 1997, he joined Hewlett-Packard as a premier expert in his field, a role that allowed him to travel the globe, sharing his technical mastery with colleagues and customers worldwide.
Manfred’s mechanical brilliance extended far beyond the machine shop. In his retirement, he found great purpose and camaraderie as a volunteer at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport. There, he applied his decades of expertise to the restoration of "Miss Virginia," a vintage Douglas C-47 Skytrain. He deeply valued the "club" atmosphere of the restoration crew, where he could share his passion for aviation history and technical precision with fellow volunteers.
Beyond his professional achievements, Manfred lived a life that was profoundly human – one marked by real struggles, but defined by an even greater capacity for gratitude. He carried the weight of a difficult childhood and faced his share of mistakes along the way. Yet, through the ups and downs, he emerged with a remarkably tender heart and a positive outlook. He lived with immense gratitude for the good things in his life; every kindness extended toward him was noticed and appreciated, truly lifting his spirits. It was this same desire to find the joy in life that made him a legendary jokester, always ready to brighten the room with a laugh.
Manfred’s greatest sense of freedom was found on the back of his Harley Davidson. An avid rider well into his 70s, he found pure joy on the open road, traveling the beautiful country backroads with the wind in his face. He will be remembered for his adventurous soul, his deep loyalty to his friends, and his quiet habit of providing generous support to family and friends in times of need.
Manfred is survived by his daughter, Melinda Carlson and her husband Kraig; his two beloved grandchildren, Connor and Kyra; and his dear cousins, Evelyn Krautsack, Bill Krautsack, Steve Krautsack, and Kathy Forbes.
A Celebration of Life will be held on [Date] at [Time] at [Location Name and Address]. Manfred’s legacy of true friendship, laughter, and gratitude will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He has traded the open roads of Illinois for the golden paths of eternity. Ride on, Manfred.
