Margaret Mary (McCabe) Thornton

Margaret (“Peggy”) Mary Thornton (nee McCabe), age 81, passed away on Friday October 28, 2022 surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Peggy was born on September 29, 1941 in Pawtucket, RI.  She graduated from Tolman High School in 1959, where she was on the swim and basketball teams.  Peggy was inducted into the Rhode Island and National Honor Society.  She received a full academic scholarship to the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.  There, she was the President of the Nursing School and represented the student body at the American Nurses Association National Convention and was crowned May Queen her senior year. She graduated in 1962 and had a long fulfilling career as an orthopedic nurse.

Peg was also an active member of St. Anne Catholic Community (Barrington) and Holy Family Catholic Church (Inverness). She had a love for knitting/sewing and would take on projects for anyone in need, including sewing baptismal bibs for Holy Family as well as knitting Irish sweaters for each of her grandchildren.  Peggy was very giving and selfless to everyone around her. She cherished her family and loved to entertain, cook, and create memories for her children and grandchildren. She had a fierce Irish spirit and was a true fighter, throughout her entire life. She will be dearly missed by all who knew or were touched by her.
Peggy is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Michael Thornton; her loving children, Michael (Elizabeth) Thornton, Patrick Thornton, and Colleen (Michael) Irvin; cherished grandchildren, Brendan Thornton, Sarah, Hannah & Jack C. Thornton, Katie & Jack K.Thornton, Riley and Sean Irvin; siblings, Kathy Durkin, Patricia (Frederick) DeMarco, and Eileen (Ray) Cusick.

Preceded in death by her son, Brian Thornton; parents, Patrick and Margaret McCabe.

A visitation for Peggy will be held from 9:30am until the time of mass at 10:30am on Friday, November 4, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church 2515 W Palatine Rd, Inverness, IL 60067.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.
