Mark Lightbody, 54, of Crystal Lake, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026.
He was born in January 1972 to Bill and JoAnn (née Reichert) Lightbody.
Mark is survived by his siblings, Joell (Eric) Maier and Eric Lightbody; his nieces, Jasmine and Erin Maier; and his special person, Rachel Wilson, along with her family.
Mark was the kind of person who could fix just about anything—and if he couldn’t, it certainly wasn’t for lack of trying. His career was a natural fit for his talents, as he worked as a machinist at APS. His coworkers knew they could count on him not only for his skill in troubleshooting, but also for the wide array of music he shared through his ever-playing playlists.
In his free time, Mark enjoyed seeking out unique microbrews throughout the Midwest. He had a passion for cars and especially loved bringing out his red Ford Mustang Cobra GT350—though he was never just a one-car guy and owned many others over the years. A devoted Chicago Blackhawks fan, he proudly wore his collection of team jerseys. More recently, one of his greatest joys was spending time with Rachel, making memories together at places like the Ice Cream Museum and Kalahari Water Park.
Mark’s life was full of love, laughter, and purpose. In his passing, he continues that purpose by giving the gift of life to others through organ donation. It was his wish and a true testament to the kind of man he was—selfless, generous, and always thinking of others.
His family will miss him more than words can express, but they find comfort in knowing his legacy lives on—not only in cherished memories, but in the lives forever changed by his final, heroic act.
