Mary J. Gehrke, of Hoffman Estates, passed away peacefully with her beloved family at her side on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the age of 79.
She was born May 28, 1946 in Chicago, the daughter of the late John and Rita (Bucur) Jacob.
Mary devoted 34 years to teaching at Spalding High School in Chicago, where she left a lasting mark on generations of students. Known for her dedication and compassion, she formed meaningful connections with both her students and colleagues, becoming a cherished member of the school community. Her love of education extended into her own family, inspiring her daughters to pursue careers in education as well. Beyond the classroom, Mary was a gifted and creative spirit. She enjoyed cross-stitching and painting, producing many beautiful works of art over the years. This is where her passion of collecting birdhouses was inspired from. Her creativity was joyfully shared through “Camp Nana,” where she always had crafts prepared and waiting for her grandchildren. Fiercely devoted to them, she was always present, ready to help, encourage, and celebrate their lives.
Above all else, Mary treasured the time she spent with her family and friends, whose love and presence were the greatest joy of her life.
Mary was the loving wife of the late Arthur Gehrke; cherished mom of Nina (Marc) Gryzlo, Christine Poduska, and Gina (Jason) Bodam, Rochelle (Paul) Lundberg and Cathy (Steve) Cook; beloved Nana of Marc and Aidan Gryzlo, Annabel, William, and Emmeline Poduska, Arthur and Eleanor Bodam, Michael (Samantha) Malec, Rachel (Frank) Bueno, Dennis Malec, Megan Cacioppo, and Lauren (Brian) Rowland; and her great-grandchildren, Olivia and Layla Bueno, and Boston Rowland; and loving sister of the late Ann (the late Anthony) Janka and George (the late Joan) Jacob.
Friends are welcome to visit with Mary’s family on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 from 1:30 until the time of the funeral service at 4:30 at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W Main St (Lake-Cook Rd), Barrington. Interment will be held privately with her family.
