Mary Hopper, 86, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026. She was born on January 30, 1940, in Dowagiac, Michigan, to Stanley and Frankie Gajewski. She was the second youngest of five children and grew up in a loving family that meant so much to her throughout her life.
She moved to Crystal Lake right after high school where her life would change in a wonderful way. In 1971, she was introduced to George Hopper by a neighbor of her older sister. Their connection was immediate, and just a few months later they were married on October 30, 1971, in Crystal Lake. The two built a life together filled with dedication to their family, their work, and their community. They celebrated nearly 49 beautiful years of marriage until his passing in May 2020.
After retirement, Mary and George operated Early Edition, a small coffee shop in downtown Crystal Lake that became a favorite stop for many local commuters. Mary loved seeing the regulars each morning and took great joy in the friendships she formed there. She also worked at Crystal Lake Deli, where her warmth and kindness made her a familiar and friendly face to many.
Family was the center of Mary’s world. She especially loved attending her grandchildren’s games, performances, and activities, always cheering them on and celebrating their accomplishments. She was incredibly proud of them and treasured every moment spent together.
Mary also had a deep love for animals, especially cats, and virtually any wild animal. Throughout her life, she welcomed many cats into her home, each one loved and cared for as part of the family.
Mary will be deeply missed by her children, Bryan (Melanie) Hopper and Beth (Geoff) Stephens; grandchildren, Jack (Jenna), Charlie, Danny and Ally; her sister, Julie (Allan) Johnson; and by many nieces and nephews
Her family is especially grateful for all those that spent time with her after George’s passing. This includes friends, family and neighbors. She received amazing care near the end of her life and know she felt safe and loved in her final days.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
A celebration of her life will be held on June 13, 2026. More details will be announced in the coming weeks
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to Helping Paws Animal Shelter, 2500 Harding Lane, Woodstock, IL 60098; https://helpingpaws.net/
