Mary L. Landis

Mary L. Landis, 80, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026. Born on April 30, 1946 in Elgin, Illinois, she was the youngest daughter born to John and Nannie Mae (Tipps) Murtaugh.

On May 4, 1968, she married the love of her life, Charles “Buck” Landis, and together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. They celebrated 56 beautiful years of marriage until his passing in 2024. Mary was the steady, grounding presence in her marriage, balancing her husband's vibrant personality with her own calm, practical nature. She was giving and generous not only with the things she made, but also with her time, patience, and willingness to help others.

A talented seamstress for many years, she eventually discovered an even deeper passion in quilting, an art that became one of the greatest joys of her life. For Mary, quilting was about much more than fabric, thread, and patterns. It was a way to express her creativity, share her talents, and bring comfort to others. She enjoyed teaching sewing and quilting, both formally and informally, passing along her knowledge and skills to anyone eager to learn. She also found great happiness in giving away the things she made. From baby quilts to handmade bibs for care centers, her creations were often gifts of love, thoughtfully made and generously shared with others.

Although quilting was her greatest passion, Mary's creativity extended to knitting, cross-stitching, and crocheting. She was happiest when she had a project in her hands and an opportunity to make something meaningful for someone else.

Mary was a proud supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and sports, often found cheering on the sidelines or sharing in their achievements. She was also devoted member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church; Mary carried her faith and her caring nature into the many ways she served and supported those around her.

She is survived by her children, Kimberly Mae (Jason) Hintz and Brian Landis; her cherished grandchildren, Alivia and Gabriel Hintz, and Ryland Landis; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Buck” Landis and by her sister, Cathy Pierce.
