Melvin K. Nerby, age 89, passed away comfortably in his sleep on October 23, 2026, in New Braunfels, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of professional achievement, a vibrant active lifestyle, and deep devotion to his family.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 27, 1937, Mel grew up with a sharp mind and a strong work ethic. He graduated from Lane Tech High School in 1955, a foundational time in his life during which he met his true love. On September 7, 1957, Mel married his high school sweetheart, Geri Nerby. The two shared a beautiful life of companionship, love, and shared adventure until Geraldine's passing on December 23, 2021.
Mel spent a distinguished career with Midwest American Dental Supply, where his dedication and leadership shone as he worked his way up from the ground floor to plant manager. His work took him and his family across the globe and the country. In 1976, Mel moved his family to Dublin, Ireland, living there until 1980 to establish and build the European division of the dental manufacturing facility for Midwest American. Following their return to the States, Mel’s professional journeys brought him to Asheville, North Carolina from 1984 to 1986, Pittsford, New York from 1987 to 1997, and Las Cruces, New Mexico from 1999 to 2008.
Upon retiring, Mel returned home to South Barrington, Illinois, where he successfully lived on his own until 2024. Throughout his life, Mel embraced an energetic and active lifestyle. He loved boating, spending countless weekends at the marina with Geri aboard their boat. He was also an avid snow skier and snowmobiler. Above all, Mel loved golf. He treasured his time on the course with his friends, playing in a summer golf league with the guys until the impressive age of 85.
Mel was a proud family man. He is survived by his three sons, Steven Nerby of California, Scott and his wife Cathy Nerby of Illinois, and Shawn and his wife Beth Nerby of Texas. His legacy also lives on through his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many communities he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 10 am until 12pm on Friday, December 11, 2026 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main Street, Barrington 60010. Interment directly following at Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington.
