Michael J. Flanigan, 81, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully September 19, 2025.
Born in Chicago on October 9, 1943, to William and Jane (Fitzgerald) Flanigan, he married Susan Engelson during a historic snowstorm on January 28, 1967. Together they raised four children in Crystal Lake, where they built their home in 1976.
A graduate of Notre Dame High School, Michael served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964–1968, later attending Harper College and Northern Illinois University. He owned Mike Flanigan Painting and Decorating and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Michael was an avid outdoorsman, triathlete, and the proud captain of his boat on Lake Michigan. He loved Colorado’s mountains, skiing, and biking, and was the biggest supporter of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; children, Stacey Flanigan, Kelly (Nichole) Flanigan, Kerry (John) McInerney, and Brian (Sara) Flanigan; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sisters, Kathy (Bill) Holiday, Beth (Michael) Prior, and Patty (Bill) Wenger. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rick Flanigan.
Visitation will be 4-8pm Friday Sept. 26 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave (Route 176) Crystal Lake. Mass will be held Saturday Sept 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Crystal Lake, followed by burial, with military honors, at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine.
