Michael Neil Hoy

April 4, 1956 — September 14, 2023

Davenport Crystal Lake

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael (Mike) Neil Hoy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. Michael departed this world on September 14th, 2023 leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience that will forever inspire those who were privileged to know him.

Born on April 4, 1956, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Neil and LaVerne Hoy. Mike is survived by his cherished wife, Rita Hoy; his loving daughter, Natalie (Matthew) Candir; his 3 grandchildren, Harper, Colton, and Stella Candir; his mother, LaVerne Hoy; his siblings, Deb (the late Ken) Neahring and family, Ted (Mary) Hoy and family, Annette (Dick) Theobald and family, Mary (Dave) Wisniewski and family, Chuck (Lisa) Hoy and family; and many loving uncles, aunts, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Neil Owen Hoy.

Michael's journey began at Southern Illinois University, where he met the love of his life, Rita. Their college romance blossomed into a 39-year marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for each other. Although no marriage is perfect, their enduring love story was a testament to the power of commitment and partnership.

As a father, Mike took immense pride in his daughter, Natalie Candir. He watched her grow into a remarkable individual, embodying many of the same qualities he held dear, such as generosity, intelligence, loyalty, and having a strong work ethic. His love and pride in Natalie knew no bounds and he valued each moment they spent together.

Mike was also a cherished grandfather (papa) to Harper, Colton, and Stella Candir, showering them with love, wisdom, and endless affection. His bond with his grandchildren was a source of immense joy and fulfillment in his life. He reveled in their presence and cherished every moment watching them grow.

Professionally, Michael dedicated over three decades of his life to his role as a Retrofit Specialist at Serac working on package machines. His expertise and dedication in his field earned him respect and admiration from colleagues and clients alike. He approached his work with the same passion and determination that he applied to his hobbies and family life.

Beyond his career, some of Mike’s hobbies included both restoring classic cars and playing basketball, where he showcased his talent and enthusiasm. He could spend hours working in his garage on his cars and could spend just as much time talking to others about some of the cars he rebuilt. He also possessed a unique ability to both build and fix things, and he never backed down from a challenge, believing that nothing was too difficult to attempt. Mike didn’t believe in hiring someone to install or fix something if he thought he could figure it out himself – which most of the time he could.

His intelligence, kindness, and love for those around him were evident to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Although he was never the loudest in the room, when he was with those he cared about he could talk for hours. Mike had a remarkable gift for making people feel valued, and his warm and compassionate nature left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he encountered.

Michael Hoy's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those he touched. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the love he shared with us all.

A visitation service to honor Michael's life will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023 from 4pm till 9pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E.
