Michael “Mike” Charles Flynn, 85, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024. He was born on May 27, 1939 in Tiffin, OH, to the late Paul & Elsie Flynn.

Mike was a 1957 graduate of Calvert High School before pursuing higher education. He earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Notre Dame in 1961, followed by his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1965.

After serving as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1965-1968, Mike embarked on a distinguished career in medicine. He joined Suburban Pediatrics, LP in Niles/Morton Grove, IL, in 1970 and supported patients and their families for the next forty years.

Throughout his medical career, Mike also served as a Resident/Clinical Instructor of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois Medical School, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL, imparting his expertise to aspiring medical professionals.

Beyond his medical practice, Mike was a Renaissance man with a diverse array of interests. An avid photographer, book collector, and tennis player, he found joy in capturing life's moments, finding the next “great read,” and engaging in friendly competition on the court. A connoisseur of fine cuisine and wine, Mike's culinary skills and discerning palate delighted friends and family alike.

His natural curiosity shaped much of his time away from work. He traveled the world with friends and family to explore diverse cultures and landscapes. A true audiophile, Mike's love for music transcended genres. He instilled in his children a passion for music that they, in turn, have passed to the next generation. His meticulous assembly of HO scale model trains and layouts, as well as his extensive collection of B&O Railroad historical books, documents, and ephemera reflected his deep appreciation for the golden age of American railroads.

Outside of his medical practice, Mike was deeply engaged in his community, both through the Town of Kildeer Planning Commission, from 2015 to 2018, and as an early member of the Farmington Bath and Tennis Club. He was a devoted parishioner and benefactor at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Lake Zurich, IL, where he found solace and strength in his faith, guiding him through life's challenges with grace and resilience.

Mike's greatest joy and source of pride was his family. He married Ruth Stockard in 1965, and though their paths diverged in 1993, their shared commitment to their children remained steadfast. His enduring commitment to his family was the cornerstone of his life, and he leaves behind a legacy of love as the cherished father of Sean (Lily) Flynn, Patrick (Rachel) Flynn, Kevin (Amanda) Flynn, Liz (Mike) Knaebe, and Tim (Courtney) Flynn. His twelve grandchildren were the joy of his heart, and his influence will forever shape their lives.

A memorial gathering for Mike will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 9:15 AM until the time of Mass at 10 AM at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 33 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital or Calvert Catholic Schools in Tiffin, OH.
