MILTON NOEL MOONEY, 71, passed away peacefully, at home in South Barrington, on May 1, 2023. Milt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 2 ½ years ago and given a life expectancy of 1 ½ years. He considered anything beyond, a victory. With a full head of hair until the end, Milt fought his battle with the same tenacity and courage he applied to all his life endeavors.
Born November 22, 1951, Milt’s story started with humble beginnings in Ashland, Ohio, “home of the Arrows”. Post- World War II America, his loving mother Marjorie, and his Bronze Star veteran father Noel, imparted an unyielding sense of leadership, integrity, frugality, and patriotism that endured throughout Milt’s life.
Milt distinguished himself early, earning multiple academic and athletic accolades. Countless newspaper articles chronicle his stellar basketball and baseball careers, community involvement, and many jovial escapades. The respect and admiration earned among Milt’s high school classmates led to his election as class president.
With a hard-earned full-ride basketball scholarship to William and Mary, Milt equipped himself with the education that would lead to an illustrious career at retailers across the country, culminating with ten years at Sears as Senior Vice President of stores.
Though Milt’s career took him all over the world, his most cherished memories came from friendships forged from his childhood, his Lambda Chi fraternity brothers, his colleagues and his family.
Milt’s sense of adventure, restless strength, and affinity for leadership never wavered. He enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, jet skiing, and hiking with Suzi and his children, in all 50 states and continued even as he battled cancer. No one was the same after experiencing one of Milt’s famous bonfires. He was a resolute handyman who could be found woodworking, painting, or engaged in a multitude of home improvement and carpentry projects.
Most of all, Milt enjoyed and cherished the time spent with his family. He taught his children about hard work, rock and roll, character, integrity, strength, humility and most importantly, how to work hard and play harder!
Milt is survived by his beloved wife Suzanne Kreis (nee Rautbord); loving children Eric and Alex (Hazel) Mooney and John (Courtney), Adeline (Pat), James, Charles, and Emma Kreis; cherished grandchild, Audrey Kreis; brother Michael (LeeAnn) Mooney, aunt Barb Helmling and many cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents, Noel and Marjorie Mooney; Uncle Bill Helmling.
A celebration of Milt’s life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 with a memorial from 9am until eulogies at 11am at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W Main Street (Lake-Cook Rd) Barrington, IL 60010.
