Davenport Barrington

Nicholas Joseph Galatte, 85, Barrington, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed away on February 17, 2023. Born in Chicago on July 2, 1937, to the late Helen (nee Bartuca) and Joseph Galatte.

Nick graduated from St. Rita High School and attended Quincy College. He worked in his father’s business, Joseph Galatte and Sons Landscaping before embarking on his own career as a business owner, florist, and event planner. As the long-time owner of The Flower Cart, Inc., Nick brought his creative talent to clients, businesses, and major Chicago events including serving as Chicago’s Crystal Ball Designer.

He attended the American Floral Art School in Chicago and was a member of Meeting Planners International. He held a masters in European Floral Design from their International Design School and was a member of the American Academy of Floriculture. He was also a member of the American Institute of Floral Design and served as their President in 1982. While he loved working with all his clients, he was most proud of his time with former President George H. Bush and his wife Barbara being asked to decorate the Vice-President’s Mansion for the Holidays in 1984.

Nick’s lifetime partner of more than fifty years, Donald R. Kudzma, preceded him in death. Nick and Don were married in August of 2014 and enjoyed a lifetime together of travel, entertaining friends and family, cooking, and being members of several gourmet clubs. Their home was featured in several prominent magazines and was a warm and welcome place for others to enjoy.

Nick was a devoted father to his three daughters; Gail (James) Howard of Barrington, Lynne (Dan) Budig of LaPorte, IN; and Lisa (Tim) Kuban of Hickory Hills; and a partner in parenting with their mother, Jan Galatte of Palos Hills. His family also includes 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren whose lives were impacted by his love and generosity. Nick was preceded in death by his sister, Angeline “Babe” (Norbert) Zawacki. He is also brother to Andy (Nanci) Galatte of Braidwood.

Most recently, Nick was cared for by the wonderful people at The Garlands of Barrington. Their kindness and support brought him joy and a renewed spirit during his last year. A private celebration of life will be held later.
