Nicholas R. Shimp

Nicholas R. Shimp, of Crystal Lake, passed away October 17, 2025 at the age of 77.

Nick was born on February 2, 1948, in Elgin, Illinois, to the late William J. and Mary A. (Shomin) Shimp. From a young age, Nick showed remarkable resilience—overcoming polio at just 18 months old, a testament to the strength that would define his life.

In 1971, Nick married the love of his life, Cheryl Nicholson, in Columbus, Ohio. Their marriage was a lasting partnership marked by deep devotion and loving support, spanning 50 years until Cheryl’s passing in 2021.

Nick proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. Following his service, he combined his curiosity and skill into a career in computer repair, eventually running his own business. Outside of work, he found joy in fishing and playing guitar—simple pleasures that brought him peace.

Above all, Nick was a devoted and loving father. He cherished his family and was known for his kind nature, wonderful sense of humor, and easygoing spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, and compassion, remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Nick is survived by his loving daughters, Emily Shimp and Stacie Romines; his beloved grandchildren, Ashley, Joyce, Jeffery, Ash, and great-grandson, Christopher; and his loving siblings, Mary Kay (the late Donald) Vassau and Bill (Jane) Shimp.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Shimp.

Interment of Nick and Cheryl will be held at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery, Lake Bluff, Illinois, privately for the family.
