Norbert E Schuelke, lovingly known as “Norb”, of Algonquin, IL, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 18, 2026. He was 70 years old.
He was born to parents Elvin & Esther (Voland) Schuelke, October 14, 1955 in Treysa, Germany. The family moved to Chicago and later to Palatine, Illinois. Norb graduated from Northern Illinois University and had a career with Motorola as a systems analyst programming business software.
Norb’s life was marked by his love of God, family and friends. He met his wife, Martha (Crawford), when they served together as summer missionaries in Austria. For 43 years of marriage, they served together in various ministries of the church, to include leading Bible studies, hosting small group fellowship, serving in Awana and ushering. He was a faithful member of the Evangelical Free Church of Crystal Lake.
Norb had many interests that brought him joy. He had a special appreciation for trains and boats, and he enjoyed the fascination, beauty, and history surrounding them.
Music was another of Norb’s great loves. He played the piano and especially appreciated the sound of a quality grand piano. He often played the hymns he loved, allowing the music of his faith to fill the room. For many years he played for a weekly hymn sing at the retirement community where his parents lived. More recently, he took the time to play a few hymns for his mom and others every time he visited. The senior lunch group from church always appreciated his hymn playing.
He is survived by, and will be forever loved by, his wife, Martha. He is also survived by his mother, Esther Schuelke, who celebrated 100 years, and his siblings Andy (Jane) Schuelke, Cornelia (Toby) Johnson, and Marc (Kim) Schuelke. He is also lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his father, Elvin Schuelke.
Though Norb’s passing came far too soon, the life he lived and the faith he carried leave a lasting legacy. He loved the Lord wholeheartedly, and those who knew and loved him will remember his faith, his love of music, his appreciation for the beauty of creation, his many interests, and the special time he shared with family.
Norb will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
A visitataion will be held on Thursday, August 27, from 11am until the time of a service at 12 Noon at the Evangelical Free Church of Crystal Lake (575 E Crystal Lake Ave, Crystal Lake) followed by a luncheon. Burial will be Friday, August 28 at 1 pm at Union Cemetery in Palatine.
