Patricia Ahern Horkavi, 91, of Barrington, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026 in Barrington. Born on July 21, 1934 in Detroit to the late John C. and Margaret Mary (nee Brisbois) Ahern, Patricia lived a life full of joy, service, and connection.
Patricia was the loving wife of the late Francis J. Horkavi, Sr. for 61 years. Together, they built a beautiful family. She was the proud mother of Anna (the late Jim) Davis, Judy Horkavi, Peggie (Mark) Wollney, Francis (Sara) Horkavi, and Robert (Chris) Horkavi. Her role as a grandmother was one she cherished above all. She was the adored grandmother of John (Katelyn), Elizabeth (Robert), Michael, Mary (Martín), Katherine (Evan), Thomas, Michelle (Charles), Danny, Holly, Laura (Brian), Jimmy, Nicholas, and Erin. She was also a doting great-grandmother to Amelia, Lucas, Magnolia, Emma, Rosalie, Lucía, and one more on the way. She is also survived by her brother, John “Jack” (Jacqueline) Ahern.
A dedicated educator, Patricia began her career as a Home Economics teacher in Detroit, where she shared her knowledge and talents with her students. She often recounted stories from these early teaching days, many of which became cherished family favorites. Her grandchildren especially delighted in her colorful tales. After taking time away from her career to raise her five children, Patricia returned to teaching in Barrington before later embarking on a new path as a travel agent—a role that perfectly combined her love of learning with her passion for exploring the world. She was blessed with several family trips abroad, coupled with multiple cruising experiences. Patricia also spent time serving others. Her love for volunteering began at an early age as a candy striper in Detroit and continued wherever she lived. In Barrington, she generously gave her time at her children's schools and community welcoming events.
Patricia’s warmth and bubbly personality shone in every aspect of her life. Patricia’s passion for cooking blossomed into a lifelong love of entertaining--the more the merrier! Her home was her pride and was always filled with laughter and camaraderie. Patricia also loved to sew. She made countless window treatments for her family and beautiful costumes for her grandchildren. Through the years, she enjoyed local bowling leagues, friendly card games and planting her flower beds. Patricia’s steadfast faith guided her throughout her life, reflected in her devoted membership at Saint Anne Catholic Community.
A visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, at St. Anne Catholic Community, 120 N.Ela St., Barrington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary, IL.
