Phyllis M. Hegy (nee McHenry), age 86, died peacefully on June 3, 2025 at Melody Living (assisted living) facility in Lake-In-The-Hills, Illinois.
Phyllis was born to Lloyd and Dorothy (Klawonn) of Aurora, Nebraska, October 19 1938. Phyllis spent her first 18 years in Aurora, graduating from High School in 1956. She was employed by the U.S. Navy as an administrative assistant in Arlington, VA. Soon she met and married Air Force Sergeant David Hegy and they recently celebrated 66 years of marriage together. David later joined the Federal Aviation Administration and that career resulted in many moves. After five years in the Washington D.C. area, they lived and worked in Schaumburg, Illinois, Salt Lake City, Utah, Hayward, California, and two years in Singapore before retiring in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
Phyllis was extremely talented in arts and crafts. She loved floral design and had her own floral design shop for several years. She always prided herself as having the best flower garden in the neighborhood. She was known as a jokester and enjoyed making people laugh. She also donated her time as a Schaumburg Jaycee and Scout den mother.
Phyllis is survived by her husband and four children, Michael, Deborah, Christopher, and Todd. Other surviving family includes 11 grandchildren; Michael, Nick, Jack, Brandon, Zachary, Natalie, Ismail, Jacob, Elissa, Karina and Kira. She is also survived by a sister (Ann Lentz) and brother (Douglas McHenry). She was preceded in death by her parents and brother (Clayton).
A memorial service will be held Saturday June 28th at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 202 East Schaumburg, Schaumburg, Illinois. Memorial visitation is scheduled from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM followed by a church service.
The oncologist treating Phyllis said that he had never had a patient survive Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma as long as her, 27 years since discovery. For that reason, Phyllis desired that any donations go to the American Cancer Society.
