Ratan Kotumal Punwani peacefully departed for his heavenly home on October 15, 2025, in his residence of Long Grove, IL, with his children, sisters, extended family, and dog by his side. Ratan will forever be remembered for his soft, charismatic smile, resilience, and easy-going spirit.

Ratan was born on February 29, 1948 (yes, leap year!) in India to Mr. Kotumal and Mrs. Radha Punwani. He married his wife, Malti Khemani, on October 12, 1979, in Dubai. The couple then migrated to Staten Island, NY, in 1980 and had two children – an elder son, Vishal, and a daughter, Natasha. Ratan is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Cristina, his granddaughter, Sofia, his sister-in-law, Chandu, and son-in-law, Ravi.

Ratan is the epitome of the immigrant dream. He worked as an accountant in Manhattan for over 35 years, diligently saving enough to move his family to Edison, New Jersey, with a focus on providing his kids with a high-quality education. Ratan was a devout father, championing his children in all their endeavors and tirelessly supporting their recreational activities. Ratan’s primary goal in life was to see his kids succeed, selflessly providing whatever was necessary to get them there.

He was a devoted and loyal husband. Ratan and Malti endured many health scares through their married life, from cancer to strokes to heart disease, and even some broken bones in between. While his family jokes that Ratan has nine lives, the reality is a man so driven to be there for his family that he quietly pushed through therapy, drastic lifestyle changes, and long nights. Ratan weathered through the storms with a fierce will to live and a level of perseverance most others couldn’t muster.

In our grief, let us smile knowing that Ratan – Dad – is hugging Casper and holding Malti’s hand again.

The Funeral Service for Ratan K. Punwani will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 941 South Old Rand Road, Lake Zurich, IL 60047.
